Although disposable nursing pads are more expensive than their washable counterparts, they are usually pegged as the more convenient of the two. Disposable nursing pads are easy to change and store when you're out and about or travelling on longer trips. They also take very little time away from your other daily activities, as they don't require drying or cleaning. |
Washable nursing pads are less expensive than disposable, and thus may be a good option if you're trying to stay within a tight budget. Washable pads are just as comfortable as disposable, if not more so, but they do take time to prepare for use. You may want to consider buying a fairly sizeable amount of washable pads so you do not have to wash and dry them constantly. With washable pads, you must avoid wearing them if they are not fully dry because this can cause chafing and yeast growth around the nipples. Also avoid liquid fabric softeners that can affect the pads' absorbency. |
Features to Look For
For washable:
- 100% cotton that ensures airflow to the breasts and nipples.
- Thick for added absorbency.
For disposable:
- 100% cotton or all paper.
- Plastic breathable lining that won't irritate healing nipples.
- Multiple layers for added absorbency.
- Adhesive backing if you experience unwanted movement.
Other Tips
- The larger the pad, the more discreet the pad will look under clothing.
- If you don't like your brand of disposable pad, explore other options.
- Pink-coloured pads are often less noticeable under light-coloured clothing.
