Pet Bird Basics Buying Guide

Everyone who has ever thought about getting a new pet knows that it isn't picking the pet that's the hard part, it's the preparation Knowing what to buy for your pet is more important than knowing what colour bird you want, because you're on your own as far as care is concerned. However, if you do plan on buying a bird in the near future, it doesn't hurt to have a breed in mind, and to research what basics are needed to keep it happy and healthy. A good idea is to look at some birds in a shop and ask the clerk for some basic advice. Some birds need a bigger cage, some need more toys to play with--it also depends on your individual pet  For some generalized basics on pet bird care here is a small list of some things you will probably need, regardless of which avian species you prefer. 

 Basics for Your Pet Bird

Birdcages  come in lots of different sizes.  Based on the type of bird you want and on how much room you have, there are many options. 

Food and Water Cups  clip onto the side of the cage, for the most part. They often come in different shapes and colours--some even specific to what kind of seed is needed. 

Food : Find out what kind of seed your bird is going to eat before you bring it home so there are no hungry birds or last minute trips to the pet shop. 

Toys  are fun for birds, and many spend most of their days playing. Since birds are fairly noisy already, the noise level you can tolerate is key, but many toys come with bells and other trappings. It also depends on whether or not your pet will play with it--we all have our favourites. 

Extra Basics

Cuttlebone  is a a fun bird treat!  Some pet use it as a beak sharpener, and many birds use it as a source of calcium. Use a holder  to hang it in the cage for them.

A Perch  is a stimulating activity.  Some are swings and are brightly coloured; these options are exciting your pet and will keep them active and happy. 

Treats  are for those of us who can't help spoiling our pets. These snacks are based on specific feeding habits and are made from seeds, honey, or other grains. 

Litter : Because you just can't own a pet without cleaning up after it. Litter keeps the cage smelling cleaner longer. Also available: cage liners
