Overall, its clearly a great form of exercise, but you should make sure you understand all aspects of running before taking it up as hobby.

Quick Tips

  • If you're going to be running outside, run with a partner or cellphone (especially women).
  • Always stay hydrated. Like with all other forms of exercise, running can quickly lead to dehydration.
  • Check with your doctor to make sure you are physically able to start a running routine.
  • Always be alert. Cars, bikers or even cracks in the side walk can lead to some serious injuries.
  • Avoid running at night. It's much more dangerous and cars can't see you as easily.
  • Make sure your shoes are tied. Shoe laces are easy to trip over and can easily get caught in a treadmill.
  • Stretch before and after you run. It can help prevent injury.
  • Listening to music while running can help motivate you, but is unsafe when running outside.
  • If you're running outside when its cold out, be sure to bundle up no matter how hot you think you may get. You can always take off a layer.
  • Don't look down. It's harder to breath deeply.
  • Keep arms and hands relaxed and move them front to back rather than side to side.
  • Don't make a fist. It tightens your arm muscles and wastes energy.
