Ski Pants Buying Guide

Before hitting the slopes, get yourself some new gear  You won't want to be skiing in your old jeans, so pick up a good pair of ski pants  to stay warm and comfortable out there.  The bonus is that you don't necessarily have to sacrifice fashion for function; with different styles and colours to choose from, the options can be endless.  The bottom line is that you will want your legs protected from the elements... it's just a matter of choosing the style and fit that are right for you.

The Basic Styles

There are three styles of ski pants to consider, one option being the one-piece ski suit.  Think about how often you will be using the pants before you buy and make a selection based upon your budget and preference.

Ski Pants

  • This is a basic style, fitting much like a trouser.
  • The waistband  is often adjustable, which always helps when you have on multiple layers of clothing.
  • Think about how much easier it will be to use the bathroom...

Ski Pants with Bib

  • This style offers optimum protection from the wind and snow, which tends to make it the most popular.
  • You can find a high-waisted style with suspenders or one that looks similar to overalls.

One Piece Suit

  • A one piece ski suit is a good buy because of its warm and dry insulation, while saving you the cost of many pieces of outerwear
  • These are great for those of you who plan to stay on the slopes all day long.

What to Look For

Your outermost layer (the pants, the jacket, etc.) should provide a certain amount of coverage and insulation.  Take these factors into consideration when making your selection.

Fabrics

  • Options
    • Most pants are made of a tightly-woven polyester  or nylon  Both are durable, weather resistant, and come in different weights.
    • Ski pants made with microfibres  tends to be even more durable, resistant to the elements, and lighter in weight.  The difference is the steeper price.
    • Down will add the maximum insulation.  Look into down ski pants  if you plan to be in harsh elements.
  • Insulation
    • Think about how much insulation you will need from the pants.  If you are doing some spring skiing, insulation may not be your greatest priority.
    • Those choosing non-insulation will then want to be sure that the pants chosen are still water-resistant and breathable.
    • For skiing in colder weather, you will want the maximum insulation.  (Make sure you still layer!  This means wearing long underwear)
    • Always be sure that the pants will keep you warm, but will be breathable while you are sweating out there on the slopes.

Details

  • Zips
    • Large zips will make your life much easier when you are already wearing big and bulky gloves.
    • Look for pants with zips  on the sides of the leg for more air flow.
  • Pockets
    • Big and functional pockets are also a perk, as they can hold your keys, wallet, and any other essentials.
  • Fit
    • Pants should be roomy enough to allow freedom of movement, but not so big that you will be tripping over yourself.
    • Having sealed seams  at the bottom of the pants will add extra protection from the snow, though they may tend to get hot.
    • Those who prefer an open leg  will want to look into a gaiter  This is a fabric attached to the inside of the pant that extends over the foot to keep cold snow out of your pants.
    • You may want to look for an extra layer of fabric in the seat and in the knees of the pant for extra protection against the elements.
