Sleeping Bags Buying Guide

You have just been evicted from your flat and have no where to stay.  Your wife just kicked you out of the house and you need to sleep in your car.  You are out on holiday hiking  and looking for a comfy place to lay your head.  What do all of these situations have in common? Right! They all require a sleeping bag.  When sleeping accommodations  are up in the air,  you will inevitably need a sleeping bag.  Use this guide to find one of your own so you can get a good night's rest wherever you end up at bedtime.

Types of Sleeping Bags

Mummy Bag

  • Tell your mum to relax--the name refers to the shape of this sleeping bag, not her age.
  • Mummy bags are excellent in cold weather, but are also available in lightweight styles as well.
  • Highly recommended for outdoor/camping use.
  • When fully zipped, only your head will be exposed.
  • Mummy bags are usually designed for one person

Rectangular Sleeping Bag

  • These are great for general indoor and warm weather use.
  • They are considerably less expensive than mummy bags, but offer less protection from the elements.
  • Some are designed to fit two people.

Features to Consider

  • Check the temperature rating of the sleeping bag before you buy it.
    • For indoor use, save money and buy a lightweight sleeping bag
  • If you are purchasing the sleeping bag for a camping trip, check the weight of the sleeping bag.
    • Winter sleeping bags are noticeably heavier, so only buy one if you need to.
  • Make sure the sleeping bag you purchase has two high-quality zips.
    • This is important if one breaks so you can still stay warm.
  • Check the material of the sleeping bag
    • For camping ad outdoor use, look for a rip-stop fabric to avoid tearing when snagged.
