Snow Goggles Buying Guide

Being able to see properly is essential to any snow activity, especially ones where you're flying downhill at a fast pace. They protect your eyes from sunglare, wind and help keep the snow out of your eyes and off your face. You should look for ones that fit the shape of your face as well as give you proper ventilation and sun protection. There are a variety of styles and brands to choose from that make it easier for you to find the perfect fit.

Important Factors to Consider

Lenses

  • Choose goggles with multiple lenses. Ones with a single lense fog up more easily.
    • Check to see if they have been treated with anti-fog chemicals.
  • Colours
    • Colours should be specifc to light conditions that you're going to be skiing in.
    • Polarized or Tinted goggles  are great for sunglare, but maybe too dark on snowy days or late afternoon skiing or snowboarding.
    • Green goggles  are best for sunny days, but work in darker conditions as well.
    • Yellow goggles  create shadows and are great for conditions with low light, but won't work as well in bright conditions.
    • Red or Pink goggles  are used in low light conditions as well and have generally the same affect as yellow goggles.
    • Clear goggles  aren't good in bright conditions, but are great for late afternoon or night skiing or snowboarding.
  • UV Protection
    • Choose googles with at least 95 % UV protection.
    • They won't do much good in the sun if they don't have this feature.

Ventilation

  • Make sure the goggles have vents on the top and bottom of the goggles.
  • Larger vents will mean less fogging, but allow more cold wind to enter.
  • The vents will allow fresh air to circulate, while still keeping your eyes and face protected.

Key Characteristics

  • Peripheral Vision- Make sure that you have 180 degree peripheral vision.
    • Its important to be able to see fellow skiers and snowboarders before they're right in front of you.
  • Fit with other Equipment- Make sure that they properly fit with your helmet or over your glasses if you wear glasses.
    • If you wear glasses you should purchase goggles that correspond with the shape of your glasses and fit securely over them.
  • Adjustable Strap- Make sure that the strap can be adjusted to ensure a tighter fit. Padded straps will be more comfortable.
  • Padding- Make sure the goggles have enough padding to protect your face from the hard plastic lenses.
