Guide to Soya Milk Makers
Soya milk
is an excellent and tasty alternative to traditional cow's milk. While most commercial versions are enriched with vitamins, normal soya milk is quite nutritious. It has all the protein that cow's milk has, yet with little saturated fat and no cholesterol. It is a good source of Vitamin E, lecithin (which may help lower cholesterol), and heart-healthy polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. Additionally, using soya beans
to make milk has ecological advantages: to produce milk, a cow requires approximately 40 kilograms of food and 90 to 190 litres of water per day, and land on which to graze. Soya beans only need water and land, and as they grow, they replenish the nitrogen content of the soil.
Unfortunately, buying case upon case of the beverage can be quite expensive; however, with a soya milk maker
, this problem can be easily remedied. Before such machines, making homemade milk was time- and labour-intensive: beans would have to be heated and ground, then boiled again and finally filtered. With a soya milk maker, this can be reduced to a one-step process requiring about 15 minutes (though you will probably need to soak the beans beforehand for about 10-16 hours).
Features to Look For
- Raw beans or cooked?: Some models are able to process raw beans as well as cooked, but this can increase the wait time from 15 minutes to about 30.
- Versatility: There are some soya milk makers that are also able to make tofu.
- Price: On average, most soya milk makers should cost around 90 to 100 £.
Many machines also come with a recipe guide with suggestions not only for soya milk, but also for okara, its byproduct.
Popular Models
Keep in mind that most soya milk makers are also capable of making rice milk, almond milk and more.
