A Quick Guide to Tango Dance Styles

  • Tango Argentin - The dancers connect at the chest (as opposed to the thigh as in American tango), and fling and hook legs around each other.
  • Tango Canyengue  - Characterized by a close embrace, firm ground contact, and bent legs.
  • Tango Liso - "Simple" tango that is free of fancy patterns, figures, or other embellishments.
  • Tango Salon - Slow form of tango that focuses on smooth movement and precision.
  • Tango Orillero - Another name for the Canyengue tango, distinguishing between the classes who performed the dance.
  • Tango Milonguero (Tango Apilado) - Syncopated footwork combined with a close embrace.
  • Tango Nuevo - "New" tango; very open and flexible to allow for large movements. Can be danced to jazz music.
  • Show Tango (Fantasia) - A hybrid of tango and other ballroom dances that features large, sweeping movements and embellishments.
  • Ballroom Tango  - Full of staccato movements and the head snaps most people think of when they hear "tango."
  • Finnish Tango  - Always performed to music in a minor key; dancers are low to the ground on bent legs with stiff frames and close, full upper body contact.
