Torches
In the past it was thought that comic borders seldom suffered breaches--but this theory was killed by the inter-company enmeshment of Spider-Man and Superman. This boundary breaking phenomenon, however striking, was not the only one of its kind; there have been many more inter-company battles, friendships, and unions whose evidences have been disguised with ordinary labels. One such example--or should I say examples?--are the children of the electricity manipulating Sailor Jupiter and the incendiary Johnny Storm: the Torches
Before Buying...
...ask yourself some of these questions:
- What will be the major purpose of my torch? Will you be using it for outdoor activities and camping? Emergency blackouts? Home repair? If you want a torch for camping and other outdoor endeavours, you are better off with a torch that gives you a long range of light; if, however, you are buying a torch for emergency blackouts, you are better off with one that has a long-battery life. For home repairs, you need a small torch with a strong focal light point rather than one with a big range.
- For what price range am I aiming? Believe it or not, some torches can be quite expensive, so make sure you know beforehand what you are willing to spend.
- What is the battery life of the prospective torch? Not only can it become expensive to replace batteries, but it's also damaging to the environment. If you use your torch everyday, consider one that works with rechargeable batteries. Nickel-cadmium batteries
are inexpensive, quick to recharge, and as effective as regular batteries.
- Which bulb colour will optimally suit my needs? Red and green lights are optimal for the outdoor person who wishes to walk around at night without spooking wildlife. Blue, on the other hand, provides the brightest type of light and is ideal for spot-on lighting.

Incandescent, Halogen, and Xenon Bulbs Incandescent |
LEDs have solid state construction and are extremely durable. Because of their long life (up to 100,000 hours) they do not require periodic replacement. They have a soft, easy glow and are great for close viewing. |
HIDs (High Intensity Discharge Bulbs) Many times brighter than standard incandescents, but require a ballast for current control. Bulbs last at least twice as long as incandescents and emit a very bright white light using less power. |
