Vegetable Peelers

Not many people know how the peeler came to be, but I can bet it was born from a frustrated cook and the poor knife upon which he took out his anger. At least something good came from this unfortunate circumstance.

The Three Basic Types

The Lancashire, the Y Peeler, and the Australian Peeler are the three basic types of peelers on the market; but since the Australian or "no name" peeler is difficult to find, it is not present on our humble table. The Australians like to keep this quick rotating peeler to themselves, which is ingenius actually---something that has no name is pretty hard to find.

Lancashire Peeler

This peeler--which also comes in a serrated  version--extends the blade from the handle, which is an extension of your hand, which is an extension of your arm--because scientifically speaking. you can't simply "be the blade" because you already are the blade. Yeah, let's put that theory into use.

Y Peeler

The Y Peeler is used like the very hair removing item it resembles--the safety razor. But instead of pulling the blade towards the body of the fruit or vegetable, push it into the skin to peel it away--obviously, do not do this while shaving your beard or your legs--that's just looking for trouble.

Variations on the Basic Peeler

Although there are very few basic alternatives, there are a myriad of speciality peelers out there. I bet you didn't even know these--or the things they supposedly peel--existed!

French Peeler

Swivel blade follows the contour of the vegetable as if it were making sweet veggie love.

Palm Held Peeler

Slides on your finger and contours to the shape of your hand. This is probably the closest you'll get to being the blade itself.

Zester

This particular zester--the good grips zester --removes the citrus' zest and doubles as a channel knife for decorating.

Dual Peeler/Pare Knife

The plastic handle of this peeler fits in one end of the blade for peeling and the other end for paring.

Julienne Peeler

Some people like Julienning, and those who do not claim there is no other reason to have one--except to make things look fancy, spirally, more fun, tastier, succulent, gourmet, and professional.

Citrus Peelers

Don't mind the skin, just dig right in--it effectively slices through tough citrus surfaces.

Egg Peelers/Slicers

This item is part of both the peeler and the slicer categories. Just don't try to slice any uncooked eggs in there.

...on second thought, if you are one of those people that talks on his or her cell phone in the gym and is using this peeler to make a protein shake please feel free to disregard my warning.

Garlic Peelers

These peelers look exactly like the finger traps that they used to give out at the circus! But instead of sticking your fingers in--which I do not recommend--stick in  whole garlic cloves and mush around the peeler in between your hands--there goes the skin.

Pineapple Peelers/Corers/Slicers

I love pineapples but I never eat them because I am too lazy, so when I found this gadget I just had to get on my knees and...open the box quickly! All I have to do is put it through the little wheel and everything that is non-edible pops off and out.

Apple Peelers

The makers of apple peelers claims it peels an apple in ten seconds. That means it will save about 24.3 seconds off my peeling regime. I must make counter space for this thing.

Automatic/Electric Peelers

Maybe if electric peelers  were stocked in prisons and military bases, peeling potatoes would not be used as corporal punishment. Even in households, peeling can be a daunting task, and depending upon the person, it may be the most dreaded thing in the world. The inner baker is suffocating under the constraints of manual peelers, forcing you to abandon your mince meat pies--oh the horror! But since the invention of the electric peeler, there is nothing to prevent you from making all the pies in the world. So enjoy your pie making, abate the arthritis of Pam and her five sisters, and strain no more with the peeler.
