Volleyball Buying Guide

Find all you need to bump, set and spike!

Knee Pads

Unless you want some nasty bruises and bumps, knee pads are an essential for the court.  They come in all sorts of colours, padding and lengths so try them on and move around before committing to a certain brand.  If you find that the one you are currently using never stays put, opt for longer knee pads  (the length of the elastic, not the padding) which will adhere better to your knees throughout the game.  If you have the opposite problem and find yours too restricting, try knee pads that are shorter.  The thickness of the padding is also another reason to test drive because some padding  is extremely thick and can feel like you're wearing a diaper on your knees, an uncomfortable sensation for most.

Net Sets/Systems

There are net sets for both the beach  and the court  so make sure you are getting the type you require before buying.  Quick assemble nets  are easy and convenient for playing with friends, but if you need one for practice, invest in standard tournament systems

Shoes

Volleyball shoes  are lightweight trainers  with specialized rubber soles for better grip and speed on the court.  The size should be true to your feet and not bought a half size bigger as your mother has always taught you to do.  And remember, ladies, men's sizes are a half size bigger than yours.

Apparel

For volleyball, the only specialized gear you really need are the knee pads.  When it comes to clothing, the best way to go is with mesh and breathable clothing  that isn't too bulky or loose.  Thick socks  are always a good idea (always bring an extra pair to a game) and female players should replace their sports bra  every year.  The elastic starts to break down after six months, so women with larger chests should definitely buy new sports bras often.

Inflation Devices

Volleyballs  are always a fun investment.  Most are less than £10, come inflated and last for years.  If you find that years in the garage have deflated your ball a bit, inflation devices  are widely available and most often do not cost more than £10.
