Wedding Menu Cards Buying Guide

Let's face it.  Your guests enjoy seeing you celebrate your new-found love, but they probably enjoy eating a delicious meal even more.  So when it comes to the wedding  menu cards, you want to get them just right.  A much anticipated piece of each table setting,  the wedding menu card should include you and your new spouse's name at the top, followed by the date of the wedding.  Next, the food options can be arranged how you see fit.  Even if you are having a buffet style wedding, it is still suggested that you list the available food and beverage options on a menu card at each table so that guests can be sure of what they're eating--sometimes looks are deceiving!  And whether you choose to have your menu cards professionally made or you make it a do-it-yourself job, this small detail of the reception  is going to be best left as a matter of preference and budget.  

Make Them Yourself

If you decide to make the menu cards yourself, you need to choose between hand-writing them and printing them using an online template.  You can create your own template or choose from an existing one that can be easily found on any speciality stationary or bridal resource website.  Popular wedding menu card fonts include, but are definitely not limited to:

  • Lucida Calligraphy
  • Verdana
  • BlairMd
  • Edwardian Script
  • Papyrus
  • Mistral.

You also want to make sure you choose the right type of paper for your menu card.  You want it to be stiff enough to stand upright on the table setting, as well as thick enough to withstand a lot of guests passing it around if need be.  Usually, menu cards are printed on heavy white or ecru coloured paper,  although the colour can certainly stray away from neutrals and match the overall theme of the wedding instead.  Silvers and blues are popular for winter weddings, for instance, while yellows, maroons and golds work well for fall.

Embellishments

You shouldn't be afraid to add other embellishments to your menu cards as well, especially if you have the time and money to do so.  

  • Rubber stamps  and wax seals  that showcase the couple's initials are a great addition to the top of any menu card.
  • A vellum  overlay can add a whimsical, romantic feel to your menu cards.
  • Ribbons  that match the wedding theme colour will tie in nicely with your table settings.
  • Patterned borders or a romantic picture at the top of each menu card help add visual interest along with a personal touch.
