Must-Haves for Autumn 2008

Waists are Back!

Say goodbye to baggy tunics  and parachute-like tops. The most universal trend seen on runways of London and New York is the return of the well-defined waist

High-Waisted Jeans

The days of low-rise  and hip-hugging jeans  seem to be numbered. High-waisted jeans  and trousers are back! Some designers are making jeans that fall above the belly button (aka "Mom Jeans), while others are opting for trousers that fall on or just below the belly button.

Wide Leg Trousers

A high-waisted  and belted  pair of wide leg trousers  are the perfect trousers to wear to work this season. The days of super skinny jeans  are gone and comfortable, yet chic, wide leg trousers are making a huge comeback. Colours are usually toned down shades of black, brown, blue, or grey.

Grey Eyeliner

Grey eyeliner  lurked in nearly every designer's collection. Most major fashion magazines are predicting that grey eye makeup is going to be huge this autumn.

Dramatic Sleeves

Dramatic, beautiful sleeves  of all sorts made their way down the runway. Add a trendy touch to simple or classic autumn staples with bell-shaped  or frilly sleeves

Plaid is Here to Stay

Plaid  is always big in the autumn, and this season is no different. Try a plaid dress  or a plaid jacket  on for size.

Electric Blues

Many models rocked some nail colour  on the runway, but one thing was relatively consistent: blue nail polish Smells like a trend! Many professionals are claiming that the electric blue nail polish seen on models for designers like Betsey Johnson  will be on everyone's fingernails this season!

Oversized Knits

Comfortable oversized knits  are back! This season, large jumpers  with interesting sleeves or off the shoulder sweaters  are going to be the most fashionable way to keep warm.

Cocoon Coats

My my, aren't you a butterfly? Cocoon coats  took Fashion Week by storm. Huge names, like Marc Jacobs made the cocoon coat a staple of their Fall 2008 line.

Big Shoulders

So many designers were channeling 1980s huge shoulders  that even the expert fashionistas were scratching their heads. Although some wonder if it'll take to the streets, big poufy shoulders have conquered the runways in New York, London, Paris, and Milan.

The colours spotted on the runway this season were unique to fall collections. Usually everything is beige black or brown  for autumn but not this year. Purple  was a popular colour (some are predicting it to be this season's colour of choice for pumps ). More than one designer paired shitake  (a mellow brown colour) with twilight blue  (a more metallic navy ), so look out for that hot colour combination.
