A corkscrew is a handheld tool that you will require to open wine bottles or other alcoholic beverages that are closed by a cork. A corkscrew has a sharp coiled metallic helix also known as the ‘worm’. The worm is attached to a horizontal handle. The handle has to be firmly held and inserted into the brittle bottle cork such that the corkscrew movement gets aligned to the movement of the cork. Once placed firmly, the corkscrew has to be unscrewed to open the bottle.
The simple horizontal handle of the corkscrew is sometimes replaced by levers that reduce the force required to insert the worm into the cork.
