Inflation Devices Buying Guide

To keep from falling flat, check out these inflation devices.

Bicycle Inflation

There are three types of bicycle inflation devices. Note that these devices can also be used to inflate basektballs.

Bike Pumps

Hand Pump : Use your hands to manipulate. You can also do this for the stand pump, which has a lever to push down on.

Foot Pump : Use foot to operate.

CO2 Pump : These small cartridges can be used when you do not have access to a regular bike pump.

Some tips for inflating your bicycle tyres.

Check if your tyre has a presta valve (skinnier valves that hold more pressure) or a schrader valve (thicker in diameter)
Don't inflate tyres too much. Highly inflated tyres are not good shock absorbers.
Check your tyres before each ride.
When inflating, rotate the tyre valve down so you are not applying stress to the pump hose.
Most floor pumps should have a pump gauge. This will give you a pressure reading to let you know how much to fill your tyres.
A correctly inflated tyre should have a little bit of give or bulge when it hits the ground.

Automobile/Motorcycle Tyre Inflation

Step 1: Check air pressure of tyres regularly with a digital tyre gauge. Make sure to do this when the tyres are cool and before you ride the vehicle. This is done by removing the valve stem cap and hooking the tube up to the tyre.

Step 2: The instruction manual for your car or motorcycle will tell you the proper pressure for your tyre. If you find that pressure is low, there are several devices to re-inflate tyres.

Manual tyre inflater : This may be more difficult to use because it will exert time and energy. Also, you will need to be very careful that you don't over or under inflate the tyre.
Automatic tyre Inflaters : These are an easier option as they inflate your tyre and then automatically shut off when the tyre is full.
For motorcycle tyres, there are also inflation devices that can be used on-the-go. A Pocket Tyre Plugger is a device that can be inserted directly into the hole of a tyre while riding on the vehicle to inflate the punctured area. A CO2 Pump, similar to those pumps used on bicycles, is also convenient for inflating your motorcycle while away from home.

Step 3: After your tyre has been inflated, replace the valve stem cap and you are ready to go.

Extra Tips:

Always be equipped with a spare tyre.
Make sure your tyres are equipped for the climate. Snow tyres may be necessary for environments with harsh winters.
Continental, Dunlop, Firestone, Goodyear and Michelin are all quality tyre brands.

Toy Inflation

Pool toy inflation might be important to read up on when you've got a couple of screaming kids and blistering summer heat.

There are two types of pool toy inflation devices:

Electric Pump : Sold in various voltages depending on the size of the items you will need to blow up.
Manual Pump : You can either purchase a foot pump or a hand pump, which will work double time to inflate toys when pushing both up and down on the pump handle.
There are also pool toy deflation devices for easy and quick storage of your larger items.
